Jeep -- The Lean, Mean, Driving Machine

There's something uniquely comforting (and maybe even a little bit thrilling) about knowing that you can take your Jeep vehicle off-road almost any time you please. The Jeep can get to places no other vehicle can; it handles terrain like a sculptor handling clay.

The Jeep had its start as a military vehicle. Primitive versions were already being put to use during the First World War, but rapid advances in automative technologies would make the Jeep available to the public by the mid 1940s.

The Jeep's commercial metamorphosis was a pretty straightforward affair: manufacturers equipped the rugged military vehicle with doors, rounded fenders, and a one-piece windshield way before they started adding heated seats and full-range 6.5-inch speakers in each door. Suddenly, the Jeep had a viable public image.

There's still a good deal of controversy about the origin of the word "Jeep". Is it a corruption of the "Government Purpose" or "General Purpose" tags placed on the vehicles when they were first used? Or is it a bit of military jargon slyly incorporated into the public vocabulary (new recruits were called "jeeps", as were unproven vehicles)?

Ultimately, no matter what you call it, you'll still enjoy driving it. The Jeep is the most versatile automobile out there, hands down.
